Kerry Sage Soap
Kerry Hawk Lessard (1968- ) is a Shawnee/Assinboine applied medical anthropologist. The descendant of Shawnee, Assinboine, Irish and German ancestors, she was raised in and formed by her Urban American Indian community. At the time of his death, Kerry's Shawnee grandfather told her, "you are our teacher," and it has been the driving force in her life. Essential to this was his reminder to always put the people first, to be generous, and to do good. As a medical anthropologist, Kerry works in the field of historical trauma and believes that, if losing our culture and language made us unwell, restoring those things in our communities will bring health and wellness. That is her dream: to make her life one that honors the teachings and sacrifices of the people she loves so much. She currently serves as the executive director of Native American Lifelines of Baltimore.
Many Native tribes use common sage or white sage in ceremonies.
